ReplyDeleteI don't want it - I don't need a cake to cover my plates, and I wouldn't invest the money in that yarn for this purpose, but the design and workmanship are really wonderful!
I would be quite impressed to see it at a party or buffet! I think the designer did a great job and its rather clever.
Ok, I think this cake is gorgeous; but I would never make it. I wouldn't use alpaca either, but some good ole acrylic. You can use the layers for china covers it seems

I think the flowers and the function they have picked for this project are what ruin it... oh and the alpaca. I agree with the above statement regarding good old acrylic. If done in crochet thread, it would make a lovely little centerpiece. It needs nicer flowers too.

I agree with the comments that its an interesting concept. However, I would never use an expensive yarn to make a plate warmer/hider thing. lol I also agree it has too many flowers. :p Its a great way to show different techniques but is purpose is just kind of silly. I give it a half fug.
ReplyDeleteI've seen some really darling crochet "treats" that have a more amigurumi style to them and about the size of the real thing like a cupcake or petit-four. Great way to use up scrap yarn and beads for "sprinkles" .

Pretty but pretentious
ReplyDeleteMy mom requested I make this (minus the flowers) for her wedding china. She hates how dusty the dishes get between uses. I WON'T be using alpaca!! But she thinks it's a cute way to remember that the dishes are from her wedding, it'll keep 'em dust free and it's "padded" between plate sizes. Hey, what mom wants, mom gets!!

ReplyDeleteLike others have said, I'd use a different yarn; and I'd use something else to make it stand so as not to use the plates. I'd probably change out the decorations too.
While I like the look of this... where are you going to store it? I have my Christmas plates in quilted covers, but I don't have the storage to stack them up decoratively. If you have a deep china cabinet, I'd say maybe. Without the plethora of flowers, though. Maybe just a few.

The sad thing is....I think I might make this for a stage prop! If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even look twice at it. But I think I will use some standard Red Heart!

I find it quite lovely, though I certainly wouldn't make it out of alpaca. It would be a nice way to use up acrylics that your well meaning but misguided friends may have gifted to you. I don't know quite why you'd want to hide your good china under one, but it might be a nice way to hide your functional plates and surprise your dinner guests. I might do the flowers differently too, something a little less...a little more...those little round flowers are a bit ugly.

ReplyDeleteWhat a wreck - perhaps the maker of this item owns alpacas and hand spins the yarn? That's what I do, so everything is made from glorious alpaca! Big fan of Cake Wrecks too, by the way. :D
