omg this serves a purpose?

And it's all made of alpaca!  what a waste (in my opinion) of wonderful fiber.  Is it supposed to keep the china warm?

If you dig it, click HERE for the free Berroco pattern.  (damn you berroco!)

  1. I actually think its very pretty!

I don't want it - I don't need a cake to cover my plates, and I wouldn't invest the money in that yarn for this purpose, but the design and workmanship are really wonderful!

I would be quite impressed to see it at a party or buffet! I think the designer did a great job and its rather clever.

  2. Ok, I think this cake is gorgeous; but I would never make it. I wouldn't use alpaca either, but some good ole acrylic. You can use the layers for china covers it seems

  3. Its sort of lovely but then at the same time, you just have to look at it and go "Ick".

  4. i think the fug is in the flowers.. too many!
otherwise, its pretty neat-o. and i agree about the choice of fiber

  5. I think the flowers and the function they have picked for this project are what ruin it... oh and the alpaca. I agree with the above statement regarding good old acrylic. If done in crochet thread, it would make a lovely little centerpiece. It needs nicer flowers too.

  6. At least it has fewer calories than the real thing.

  7. I like it, but I'd never use alpaca for it. Plus I think I'd make roses for the flowers.....
but alpaca? for dishes? what's next, silk for silverware?

  8. I agree with the comments that its an interesting concept. However, I would never use an expensive yarn to make a plate warmer/hider thing. lol I also agree it has too many flowers. :p Its a great way to show different techniques but is purpose is just kind of silly. I give it a half fug.

  9. I've seen some really darling crochet "treats" that have a more amigurumi style to them and about the size of the real thing like a cupcake or petit-four. Great way to use up scrap yarn and beads for "sprinkles" .
Check out "Curious Cupcakes". High on cuteness factor without all the calories.

  10. My mom requested I make this (minus the flowers) for her wedding china. She hates how dusty the dishes get between uses. I WON'T be using alpaca!! But she thinks it's a cute way to remember that the dishes are from her wedding, it'll keep 'em dust free and it's "padded" between plate sizes. Hey, what mom wants, mom gets!!

  11. Crocheted treats is big business. I have friends making good money from it.

Like others have said, I'd use a different yarn; and I'd use something else to make it stand so as not to use the plates. I'd probably change out the decorations too.

  12. While I like the look of this... where are you going to store it? I have my Christmas plates in quilted covers, but I don't have the storage to stack them up decoratively. If you have a deep china cabinet, I'd say maybe. Without the plethora of flowers, though. Maybe just a few.

This may be the only way I can tolerate "buttercream". LOL

(Scream becoming harder to hear as the distance of the running screamer from this sacrilege grows...)

  14. The sad thing is....I think I might make this for a stage prop! If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even look twice at it. But I think I will use some standard Red Heart!

  15. Trying to make it functional is silly. But the thing is, if it were a one-of-a-kind art piece, it would actually be pretty awesome.

I love crochet'd art, things that really show off the craft, and in that capacity, it's brilliant.

  16. This is beautiful!

Waste of alpaca, but Red Heart would be fine and a beautiful FO.

  17. I find it quite lovely, though I certainly wouldn't make it out of alpaca. It would be a nice way to use up acrylics that your well meaning but misguided friends may have gifted to you. I don't know quite why you'd want to hide your good china under one, but it might be a nice way to hide your functional plates and surprise your dinner guests. I might do the flowers differently too, something a little less...a little more...those little round flowers are a bit ugly.

  19. [...] This post on WNTC inevitably brought us to Cake Wrecks. It’s sort of a cake wreck itself, in that it’s overdecorated. Overdecorated and made of alpaca. Who in the hell wastes alpaca yarn on something like this? Even those who’s yarn stashes would never be contaminated by acrylic agree that acrylic yarn is the way to go for this one. As one who can only afford acrylic yarn, I agree. [...]

  20. What a wreck - perhaps the maker of this item owns alpacas and hand spins the yarn? That's what I do, so everything is made from glorious alpaca! Big fan of Cake Wrecks too, by the way. :D
